VPIphotonics™ was born from two pioneering ventures, BNeD in Berlin, Germany, and Virtual Photonics in Melbourne, Australia, that joined forces in 1998 to bring rigorous photonic and network simulation into mainstream engineering. Established as a dedicated business unit within VPIsystems in 2002, and later spun out and acquired by SaM Solutions in 2013, VPIphotonics has continuously evolved within a changing technology landscape to maintain its reputation as a global leader in photonic design automation. In June 2026 VPIphotonics became part of Keysight Technologies, and together Keysight's photonic design automation portfolio now reaches from device physics to full system behavior. The acquisition of VPIphotonics strengthens Keysight's circuit-level design capabilities and extends its photonic design automation portfolio to the system level with VPIphotonics Design Suite. Today, VPI's suite of professional simulation software unites an end-to-end design workflow spanning device, circuit, system, and network levels to empower innovators worldwide across academia and industry.
